Post 17- Bandwidth madness

I am realizing more and more, the complexities of providing and maintaining access to technology for SPPS staff, particularly when we have pushed so hard for them to use the new technologies in their instruction. Bandwidth- or not enough of it- is the current dilemma.
The reality is that this isn't our mother's Internet... many of the web.2 tools take up huge amounts of bandwidth, which has resulted in an almost constant traffic jam, which often discourages our teachers from continuing to try to use the technologies. Many say that more bandwidth is not the answer, that what we must do is monitor how the existing pipe is being used. There are no easy or simple (or economical) answers.

I wonder how Japan and other countries can have so much bandwidth? There was an article in the Pioneer Press which listed countries and bandwidths. Japan was on top with 93; most other countries had widths from 15 to 30. We were around 10 if I remember right. I guess I just don't understand how that all works. (and maybe I really don't need to??... or do I?)

Now that our testing will be done online, our technology people tell us we must refrain from using large amounts of band width when the students are doing their timed tests, as it slows the works down. Was it as slow when the students and staff weren't opening so many videos? Our teachers were miffed when they couldn't use YouTube as part of their lessons due to filtering. Previously, we had to take the good with the bad.
